That’s the story of “Gods Themselves” which reminds me of a cross between the movie “Ladyhawke” and the old Star Trek TNG episode “Who watches the Watchers?” It takes a different spin at a fantasy sotry by introducing some science fiction elements into it – for instance, what would happen if a “god” introduced higher technology to a world that wasn’t ready for it. The concept is quite cool and very original.
The language is well constructed, but somewhat plain. I was never impressed by a cunning piece of dialogue of a smart phrase, and there isn’t much humor – the book’s strength is definitely in the plot. Some of the characters are very good and original – the talking beetle and mathematician Werthold being my favorite – while others overstay their welcome a bit. All of them, however, have parts to play during the climax of the book, and it makes sense why they are a part of the story.
If you want to read a bit of fantasy that’s different and new, this could very well be a good option for you. The author definitely creates a world of her own, complete with politics, religion and culture, and that’s no easy thing to do. For that alone, it’s worth the cover price.
