Vol 4, #2 by Staff (from The Market List #3) Next Phase has probably the most impressive artwork and professional presentation of any small press 'zine I have seen. The guidelines for Next Phase specify the stories have some relationship to social or environmental issues. Don't think this means every story is about trying to save the scrawny rock-gecko, or an outlet for political opinion. The stories are all very unique, and in most, the message just sort of slides in with the content. The opener, "Judgment Day", by Jack McClain, is an entertaining and unusual take on the a soul at the borderline of entering heaven. "Tunnel", by John Everson, is a short, sharp satire on government spending and the priorities involved. The issue also included work by Micheal White, Ken Rand, David Gianatasio, Steve Translateur, William John Watkins, Norman Stephens, Aklilu Dunlap, Mac Tonnies, Michael Mina, and Frank O. Dodge. Art by Eric Seaholm, poetry by Kevin Kantola, Lyn Lifshin, Paul Weinman, Jim DeWitt, Mary Winters, Daniel Paul Medici, and Jay Lauffer. There's also a final interview with Roger Zelazny. A lot of material for a 48 page magazine, but it is well executed and well worth the read. Copyright © 1996 by The Market List. All Rights Reserved. |
