Conference on Southern Literature

Event Details

  • The AEC Conference on Southern Literature returns for its 17th biennial celebration on April 18-20, 2013, in beautiful Chattanooga, Tennessee. Recently described as "the leading literary event in the South" by writer and critic Louis Rubin, the AEC Conference attracts over 1,000 readers and writers from all over the United States.

What makes the AEC Conference on Southern Literature a leading literary event? Regular attendees say it's the "approachable and friendly writers," the "diversity of the speakers and topics" and the "wonderful ambiance." It's true. The AEC Conference strives to maintain an informal atmosphere where conversations will thrive, inspired by a common passion for the written word.

The AEC Conference also stands out because of its unique collaboration with the Fellowship of Southern Writers, an organization founded by towering literary figures like Eudora Welty, Cleanth Brooks, Walker Percy and Robert Penn Warren to recognize and encourage literature in the South. The 2011 Conference marks 24 YEARS since the Fellowship selected Chattanooga for its headquarters and chose to collaborate with the Conference on Southern Literature. Up to 50 members of the Fellowship will participate in this year's event, discussing hot topics and reading from their latest works. The Fellowship will also award nine literary prizes and induct eight new members, making this event the place to discover up-and-coming voices in Southern literature.

Since 1981, readers and writers alike have been finding inspiration, joy, memories and friendship in the Conference on Southern Literature experience. What will you find?

Spend three days in Chattanooga: discover new writers, share your passion with other readers, mingle with your favorite authors, fill your tote bag with signed books and much more.
